CENTRAL SCOTLAND GREEN NETWORK

Developing Natural Climate Solutions

The CSGN delivers and promotes projects that use natural solutions to support the transition to carbon net zero and to make communities, businesses and places more resilient to climate change.

This workstream incorporates a diverse set of projects, from large-scale woodland creation and natural flood management to installing green roofs. Regardless of scale, a key aim is to work collaboratively with communities and partners to build their capacity and climate resilience.

Actions

The CSGN facilitates projects that deliver the following actions

CARBON SEQUESTRATION

A focus on projects that capture and store carbon, particularly through woodland creation and peatland restoration, alongside management of coasts and wetlands.

ACTIVE/LOW CARBON TRAVEL

Creating green, active travel infrastructure to encourage low carbon forms of transport, which also benefit the places we live and work, and improve health.

RENEWABLE ENERGY FROM GREENSPACE

Increasing the generation of low carbon energy and heat from new and existing greenspaces and green infrastructure.

SUSTAINABLE SURFACE WATER MANAGEMENT

Using green infrastructure to manage surface water, including the establishment of raingardens and green roofs.

NATURAL FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT

Developing sustainable river catchment strategies and other solutions to manage flood risk.

URBAN AIR QUALITY AND REDUCING URBAN HEAT

Improving urban air quality by increasing areas of greenspace and tree planting in cities and neighbourhoods.

Featured Project

10,000 RAINGARDENS FOR SCOTLAND

This partnership project encourages the use of raingardens as a sustainable and natural way to manage floodwater, particularly in urban areas. It will also support the creation of wildlife-friendly, accessible greenspace, reduce pollution, and provide attractive places for people to work and visit. The aim is for 10,000 raingardens to be in use across Scotland by 2030.
